How To Spring Clean Your Bedroom

Spring cleaning is a great way to freshen up your home and lifestyle before summer. Your bedroom is a good place to start spring cleaning and shouldn’t be neglected. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping in our bedrooms, so of course, you’d want to make your whole room as clean as possible, and not just your bed.

In this article, we’ve broken down spring cleaning tips for your bedroom into manageable sections. You don’t have to complete everything in one day, that may be too much. Alternatively, head over to SweepSouth and make a booking with a SweepStar to have your bedroom professionally cleaned, so you can focus on spring cleaning other areas of your home.

1. Declutter Your Bedroom

The first thing you’ll want to do is declutter your entire bedroom. This includes collecting everything that doesn’t need to be taking up space in your bedroom and returning them to their homes. Clean up any rubbish that may be laying around in your bedroom too and put random old items into a box to throw them away later.

Spring is a great time to take a look at your wardrobe and see what clothing items you don’t need. Anything that doesn’t fit, is worn out, or can’t be repaired should be placed into a box. These items will be happily taken in by your local charity shop. Depending on your storage space, you may want to switch out the winter clothes for summer clothes and place your winter items in storage safely for next year.

2. Clean Your Walls

Start by removing your curtains or completely winding up your blinds. Strip your bed of all its bedding, including pillows, but not your mattress cover. Then remove all photographs and artwork from your walls for the next step. You can place them on the bed for now.

3. Dust Surfaces

Firstly, dust the surfaces of your bedroom, starting with high-up surfaces so that dust doesn’t spread around the room. Using a long-hand feather duster, begin dusting along the ceiling, and ceiling fan if you have one. Make sure to get to all the corners and remove any cobwebs. Dust any lights on the ceiling, remove and dust lampshades, and if you want to go a step further, wipe down the light bulbs with a glass cleaner. For areas within reach, you can remove dust with a damp microfiber cloth. Your baseboards, walls, and other furniture should also be dusted

Then, remove any artwork or photos from your walls. Dust the frames, before cleaning the glass in the frames with glass cleaner, like Windex. Dust and clean the walls from any spots or stains you find while you work. If you have blinds, dust them too along with your window trim and sills. For the baseboards, it may be easiest to go over them with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any dirt or debris, then a damp cloth to remove any leftover dust. Lastly, wipe down your skirting boards where dust usually tends to collect.

4. Clean Glass Items

Spray a glass cleaner onto a microfiber cloth, wipe and polish the glass in your photo frames, and then rehang them. Clean your mirrors and the inside of your windows, and any other glass surfaces. Remember not to just use a damp cloth to polish glass, as it will leave streaks. Whenever your cloth gets dirty, switch it for a fresh one.

If you don’t have a commercial cleaner you can use a homemade cleaning solution. To make the best window cleaner, combine 1 ½ cups of water with 1 ½ cups of rubbing alcohol, and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in an empty spray bottle. Alternatively, you can mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use it to clean glass surfaces.

5. Spring Clean Your Floor, Carpets And Rugs

Move your furniture if possible so you can vacuum behind and beneath them. If you can’t move the furniture, use a crevice attachment to vacuum around the base of your walls and furniture items. Then, switch back to the floor attachment to vacuum the rest of your floor.

  • For laminate floors, you can use a microfiber cloth or mop and a laminate floor cleaner. Another solution is a homemade cleaner mixed in a bucket or spray bottle – simply mix ½ a cup of water, ½ a cup of white vinegar, and ½ cup of rubbing alcohol. You can also add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.
  • For hardwood floors, mop the floor with a mixture of 2 cups of water, ¼ cup of vinegar, and ½ a tablespoon of dish soap. You can also add a few drops of essential oil.
  • If you have carpets or rugs, after vacuuming the entire floor, spot-clean carpet stains. If you have carpet shampoo, you may want to steam clean your carpet. Alternatively, you can start by sprinkling baking soda over your carpet to loosen debris and absorb moisture and odours. Then mix 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water in a bucket. Dip a scrub brush into the solution and scrub into the carpet. Try to rub the mixture into the fibres without completely saturating the carpet. Finish by dabbing excess moisture from the carpet with a dry cloth. If cleaning the carpet proves to be more of a challenge, you can always have your carpet professionally cleaned with SweepSouth.
  • For smaller-sized rugs, you can simply place them in the washing machine for a quick cycle. That’s all they need to be free from bacteria and look fresh.

6. Clean The Blinds And Curtains

Clean your blinds or curtains. If you have Venetian blinds, you can start by giving them a thorough dusting and wiping them with warm water. For other types of blinds or curtains, you can carefully vacuum them. Depending on the material, you may be able to wash curtains on a delicate wash in the machine. If you’re uncertain, you may want to take a look at how to read laundry symbols before washing your curtains.

7. Clean Upholstered Furniture

There is a wide range of fabric cleaning products, like stain remover sprays to clean your couches, upholstered beds, headboard, and soft furnishings. If you don’t have a commercial cleaner, you can clean upholstered furniture with a mixture of ¼ cup vinegar, ¾ cup of warm water, and 1 tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Spritz the soiled area and gently scrub with a soft cloth until the stain no longer remains. Make sure that you don’t over-saturate the fabric to ensure no damage to your upholstery.

8. Clean Your Bed

Next, clean the bed. Remove the mattress cover and put it in the laundry or washroom. Wipe the bed’s frame with a damp microfiber cloth. Then, start cleaning your mattress – vacuum the mattress with an upholstery or brush attachment. Spot-clean stains from the mattress, and once the mattress is dry, flip or rotate it. Don’t forget to vacuum underneath your bed, and wash your bedding, including electric blankets. If your bed hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you may need to deep clean your mattress.

Conclusion

Now the main tasks for spring cleaning your bedroom have been completed, all that’s left are some finishing touches. Rehang your curtains and make the bed with freshly washed linens. Then sort out your boxes of stuff – the box of items and clothing you’d like to give away or donate can be sat in the car. Throw out the other items you picked up, and put away the items that belong in other rooms. Don’t forget to open your bedroom windows once everything is done to keep fresh air flowing through the room. If you use this list every time you have to spring clean your bedroom, it will become quicker every year. And don’t worry if you don’t have the time to spring clean, SweepSouth is ready to provide your home with a range of trusted and reliable home services for you to choose from.
