Domestic workers play a massive role in the South African economy and homes across the globe. More than a million women are employed as domestic workers in the country, many of them the sole bread-winners in their extended families. Despite the incredible daily challenges they face, these women approach their work with pride and professionalism. Last week was Domestic Workers Week – a chance to celebrate the incredible work done by these women and to remember the sacrifices they make every day. As a leading advocate for professionalism and dignity in domestic work, SweepSouth is fully behind the aims of Domestic Workers Week.
As such, we marked the week by giving the SweepSouth community a chance to nominate their favourite SweepStars or a domestic worker outside of the SweepSouth network, giving them a shot at a share of R5 000 worth of prizes sponsored by SweepSouth, Netflorist and Wellness Warehouse.
The competition, which ran on Facebook, required SweepSouth users to submit selfies with their nominated SweepStars, along with explanations of why they were deserving of a prize.
Here are the winners for the week, as well as the nominations which landed them the prizes:
1. First prize is awarded to Janet Komota who was nominated by 2 of her clients.

Domestic Workers Week and competitions like this serve to highlight the importance of honouring domestic workers and, more importantly, ensuring fair treatment in the workplace.
