How To Clean A Dusty Mattress

If you have a dusty mattress, you may also have nights of coughing, wheezing, and sneezing. This is because dusty mattresses are not ideal for people, especially those that suffer from rhinitis, asthma, or eczema. A dusty mattress can only make these things worse. You should ideally deep clean your mattress once every 6 months, but many of us just don’t clean our mattresses. Your mattress is something you want to find time for in your lifestyle. If you want to rid your bed of dust and harmful germs, read the steps below to find out how to clean a dusty mattress.

You Will Need

  • A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
  • Baking soda
  • Essential oil (optional)
  • Antibacterial spray

Just before you start, remember that the room and the mattress need ventilation. Open the windows, open your door, and if you have a fan you should turn that on too.

1. Strip The Bedding

Start by removing your pillows, duvet and blankets, fitted sheet, and mattress cover from the bed. You can put these things in the washing machine in the meantime.

2. Vacuum The Mattress

Start by thoroughly vacuuming your mattress with an upholstery attachment, and systematically take your vacuum up and down the mattress to remove dust and other germs. An HEPA-rated vacuum is most effective in sucking up dust embedded in your mattress.

4. Spot Clean

You can spot clean stains on your mattress with a commercial upholstery stain remover, or by making your own with laundry detergent, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and some diluted dish soap in a spray bottle. Another option is to make a solution using 1 part vinegar, 4 parts cold water, and only if you want to, add 20 drops of any essential oil you like. There are several other methods you can use to clean your mattress, but here are 3 steps for a quicker clean:

Steps to remove stains:

  1. Apply your cleaner to any stains and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size and depth of the stain.
  2. Dab the area with a clean cloth.
  3. With another clean cloth dipped in cold water, dab the once stained areas to get rid of excess residue and leave it to dry.

3. Baking Soda

Next, you should deodorise your mattress. This can be done by sprinkling a liberal amount of baking soda on the entire surface of the mattress and letting it sit with the baking soda on it for at least 1 hour. You can add any essential oil of your choice to the baking soda for your mattress to have a refreshing scent after cleaning it.

4. Vacuum Again

After an hour or so, vacuum the mattress again with an upholstery attachment. Make sure to vacuum thoroughly, not forgetting the sides, crevices, and seams. Vacuum until there’s no baking soda left.

5. Flip The Mattress

Now that one side of your mattress is clean, go ahead and flip your mattress to repeat the process on the other side. It’s no good leaving one side clean and the other side dirty.

6. Mattress Clean

Once the other side of the mattress has been cleaned, you should let your whole mattress dry before putting on fresh bedding.

After completing these steps with your mattress, you’ll be able to enjoy a better night’s sleep. To keep your mattress clean, consider using a fully encased mattress protector, they are designed to prevent dust and dirt from getting into your mattress. There are waterproof designs to also protect your mattress from moisture. Enjoy the comfort and warmth of a freshly cleaned mattress.
