How To Clean A Greasy Oven

Over time you will find that your oven gathers more grease and grime every meal. If you aren’t taking care of it through regular cleaning, it may pack up sooner than you would like it to. Luckily, learning how to clean an oven is not a difficult task. It only requires a few commonly used household products to make your own DIY cleaning solution, much safer for your family than most store-bought ones.

Gather your cleaning supplies, set some time aside, and use the following method to clean your greasy oven.

Cleaning Supplies Needed

  • A small bowl
  • Old towels or newspaper
  • Rubber gloves
  • A clean microfiber cloth
  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar

Once you have gathered the required cleaning tools, follow these 7 simple steps to get rid of the grease on your oven:

1. Remove Loose Items

Take out any items from your oven that can be removed. This will include the racks, thermometers, and anything else that can be taken out.

2. Make The Floor Grease-Proof

Place some newspaper or old towels on the floor beneath your oven. This will prevent you from having to clean up any spills that may happen during the cleaning process.

3. Create A Cleaning Paste

Mix half a cup of baking soda with as much water as needed to form your own DIY cleaning paste. Start by using three tablespoons of water, and add more if need be.

4. Spread The Paste

Using rubber gloves, spread the paste on the inside of your oven. Avoid doing so on the heating elements.

5. Let The Paste Sit

Allow the paste to sit overnight. This will give it time to break down as much dirt and bacteria as possible.

6. Wipe Away The Paste

Once enough time has passed, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe away the paste. If there are more stubborn bits of grease that won’t wipe away easily, spray some vinegar onto them first before cleaning them up.

7. Let The Oven Dry

Leave the oven door open and give it some time to air-dry before placing the racks, thermometers, and anything else that was removed, back inside.

Your oven will now be squeaky clean again and ready for use for making the most delicious meals only you know how to. Check out our post on how to clean an oven for other methods you can use and some commonly asked questions about oven cleaning.
