How To Entertain Kids During The School Holidays

As a parent it may be difficult to think of ways to entertain kids during holidays, you probably have other commitments and deadlines to focus on, but your children are getting in your way and becoming restless. You might be asking yourself, “how do I entertain the kids, they’re still on holiday for a few weeks!?”. The SweepSouth team has put together some of the best and most entertaining ideas that will keep your children entertained for hours on end. Follow along as we share the tips and tricks for a successful school holiday.

Involve The Kids While Planning

You should try to plan each week accordingly and involve the children while doing so, so that they get to have a say in what makes them happiest. Split the activities up into different categories: things to do indoors at home, out in the garden, and various outings. This guide will help you create an equal amount of activities to be done. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Cooking or baking

Try to cook or bake something new at least once a week. Get a cheap recipe book if you don’t already have one and let the kids choose from a list of recipes for which the ingredients are easy to get your hands on. If your child can read, let them read the recipe from the cookbook when you go through each step together. Try not to end up cooking or baking too many things at once, but instead make each one something to look forward to. This is an opportunity for your kids to try new recipes and start helping in the kitchen.

Painting

Let the kids use their creativity with painting. Get large A3 pieces of paper and loads of colours for them to have plenty of fun getting their hands and feet covered with paint, mixing up the pretty colours, and creating their unique designs.

Sketching

Sketching is another creative outlet, and with practice, your kids will be able to sketch real items they see everyday. Consider getting sketch pads and a set of pencils, head out to the park, and tell your kids to draw something they see. This is also a great way for them to spend time outdoors.

Visit the library

Make a day out of visiting the library – your kids can choose their favourite books, music, and movies at a library. Have the kids read at the library for a while before taking books home to get them excited about the book before heading back to their comfort zone where they might want to put the book aside.

Walks in nature

Go on walks at a hiking trail or nature reserve, there are lots of plants and animals for the kids to see. Also, if you have a map, give it to them so they have a sense of control and won’t get easily bored of walking. It’s a good opportunity for them to feel like they are on an adventure.

Swimming

If you have a pool in your garden or live close to the coast, let your kids spend a day swimming at the beach or in the pool. If you don’t have a pool at home then take a trip to your nearest public swimming pool. Swimming uses a lot of energy meaning the kids will always enjoy a good night’s rest afterwards.

Take these ideas and create your own list of school holiday activities. A well-organised schedule will help to create many special memories in the weeks to come before it’s time to head back to school.
